Finding a training program for a lanky 18 year old…?

I am 18 years old, 123 lbs, 5′ 10″, and have body fat % between 4-10 (conflicting tests.) I’m not in bad shape, I’m good at running and tennis, but I really want to start getting into some strength training. By this, I mean i want to put some muscle on before I start thinking about getting “ripped.” My real interests are in martial arts and triathlete type activities.
I’ve decided to take this year to devote myself to reaching my goal.
The problem is, after looking at training programs like:
-Men’s Health Hard Body Plan
- P90X
I really don’t know what to trust.
My biggest concern is working with my natural physiology, and making sure that I’m keeping proper position in each exercise so I avoid injury and get the most out of my workouts. I find it surprising how wrong a lot of these books/dvds can be with things as simple as the mechanics of bench pressing.
I’m willing to devote as much time as I need.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

I’ll tell you what I did. Ok Your only as strong as you are for example put your arm straight in front of yourself out now try bending it start by holding against yourself feel the burn? Now bend it back slow, feel it get tight? now try bending out the same way use ur mind to work yourself any muscle you can squeeze you can work. after a week or 2 try some weights just work from there it’s not the mass it’s the strength and if your going into martial arts you really want to stay as limber as you can. Like I said I did t myself it may have been 23 years ago and before my accident but it still works…. Good Luck
